3 Important Dental Tips for Seniors

Having a good dental care routine has never been more important than now. As you get older, your teeth become more vulnerable to many conditions.

Here are three important dental tips that can help you smile for years to come!

This is something you can do with the grandchildren! You can help teach them the importance of brushing and flossing. Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. Electric toothbrushes can help limit hand movement if you suffer from arthritis.

Your dentist can check for conditions like oral cancer, gum disease, and cavities. As you age, your risk for developing cavities increases. Most of the time, medications or older fillings are to blame.

  • Medications
    • Unfortunately, dry mouth can be a side effect of your medication. Saliva plays an important role in preventing decay and cavities.
  • Older Fillings
    • Older fillings are prime spots for tooth decay. Fillings that have worn away cracked, fallen out or chipped can leave your tooth exposed to bacteria.

Partial or full dentures require proper care and maintenance to keep them looking their very best. Like natural teeth, food and bacteria can stick to your dentures and cause them to stain and smell.

  • Rinse
    • Remove food debris by rinsing your dentures in cool running water (do not use hot water! This can warp and damage your dentures).
  • Clean
    • Gently brush your dentures using a soft-bristled brush and cleaners made specifically for dentures. Soak them overnight to maintain their shape.
