As summer rolls around, we’re constantly on the lookout for things to do now that the weather is nicer. Whether you want to spend time indoors or out in the nice weather, we have some suggestions as well as some tips for staying safe no matter how you spend your time.

Outdoor Activities

Now that the weather is nice and warm, people want to make the most of the opportunity to do things outside. Here are some suggestions for outdoor activities for seniors:

  • Go for a walk – A great way to enjoy the weather is to go for a leisurely walk around the neighborhood. Keep yourself active by enjoying a walk with friends or family
  • Relax at the pool – Cool off by enjoying some time at a local pool. Be sure to wear sunscreen and not spend excess time in the sun.
  • Have a Picnic in the Park – If your local park has a picnic table or gazebo area, take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a meal outside! Make sure to bring plenty of water if spending time in the sun and enjoy some fresh fruits while spending time in nature.

Indoor Activities

When you don’t want to spend time in the summer heat, there are still plenty of fun activities for time indoors! Here are just a few:

  • Enjoy a meal with friends – Check out a new spot to eat that you haven’t tried before. You can even visit one of our Community Dining sites in DuPage or Kane County to meet new people and make new friends and lasting connections with other seniors.
  • Pick Up a New Hobby – Take time this summer to get creative! Puzzles are a great way to keep the mind active and sharp while spending some time indoors. You can also get creative through knitting, drawing, or other simple and easy crafts! If you find yourself making something you would like to share with others, you can donate crafts like handmade birthday cards to other seniors through our Intergenerational Greeting Card Program.
  • Crack Open a Good Book – Dive into a new story or reread an old favorite! Check out your local library and maybe get involved in some of their summer reading challenges. Some libraries even offer home deliveries, where they bring books directly to your house every month.
  • Get Active Indoors – Many community or senior centers offer recreational activities for seniors to get themselves moving while out of the summer heat. Here at DSCC/KSC, we hold monthly Senior Dance Parties all throughout the summer! Get active in the most fun way possible and maybe make some new friends in the process.

Staying Happy & Healthy in Summer

While we all want to make the most of our summer, it’s important that we all know our limits when it comes to participating in activities.

  • Make sure to stay hydrated, especially when spending time outside in the heat. Invest in an easy-to-carry water bottle to take with you.
  • Protect yourself from the sun. Wear lightweight clothing that can cover your skin without overheating. Wear sunscreen when spending time outside, even on days that are cloudy. Bring an umbrella or sunhat to shield yourself from the sun.
  • Bring a friend! Not only can spending time with others provide socialization, it can also ensure you have a partner looking out for you during any activity. Friends, family, or even pets can make any activity that much more enjoyable

No matter how you spend your summer, we hope you enjoy the season. Have a safe and happy summer!
