Senior
Nutrition Program
The
DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC) has operated its
countywide Senior Nutrition Program since 1983. The Senior
Nutrition Program is a volunteer driven program that provides
nutritious meals to seniors in DuPage County. The program
helps seniors obtain the proper nutrition needed to maintain
their best possible physical and mental health. We have
a Nutrition Manager on staff that analyzes each menu to
verify that all meals meet the 1/3 Dietary Reference Intake.
Some of our meals are low in sodium and cholesterol for
seniors who need a special diet.
The Senior Nutrition Program has three parts: The Home
Delivered Meals Program, the Community Dining Program,
and the Restaurant Program.
Home Delivered Meals Program
In our Home Delivered Meals Program, over 1,200 meals
are packed and delivered each weekday to frail homebound
seniors, who are unable to shop or cook for themselves.
All meals are packaged and delivered each weekday by a
volunteer work force. Volunteers are trained in food safety
and DSCC's Emergency Procedures. While these meals provide
a vital balance of proper nutrients to nourish and restore
the body, that is only part of the story.
The Home Delivered Meals Program also provides the imperative
human connection, too often lost on seniors who live alone.
The program offers the frail and homebound senior a reassuring
smile, a hug, and a familiar visitor who can check that
everything is okay, and get help for a senior in need.
This program promotes dignified and independent living
for all seniors. Last year, over 2,000 seniors received
more than 230,000 meals in their own homes through our
collective efforts. To participate in the Home Delivered
Meals Program, you can call us for more details.
Community Dining Program
In our Community Dining Program, over 300 meals are served
daily in our Nutrition Sites. DSCC currently operates
29 Nutrition Sites throughout DuPage County. Seniors are
provided with a hot nutritious meal and the opportunity
to socialize with other seniors. At many Nutrition Sites
special activities, events, and trainings are hosted for
the seniors. Meals are served by a dedicated group of
volunteers who devote their time to help others. To eat
at one of our Nutrition Sites, you can call us for more
information.
The Senior Nutrition Program distributes more than 300,000
meals each year. If you would like a printed bi-monthly

Restaurant
Program
The Restaurant Program was designed to give seniors
a dining experience, encourage seniors to enjoy their
communities and experience different styles of food.
DSCC has partnered with restaurants in DuPage County
to provide meals to participants of our Community
Dining Program. The way the program works is:
-
The seniors must present their Senior Dining Center
Program ID card at the restaurant to be eligible
to receive a meal.
-
Only specified items on the menu are available in
this program (ask your waiter).
-
The menu selections are pre-approved by a DSCC Nutritionist.
-
A suggested donation is given at the end of each
meal. (Suggested donations vary at each participating
restaurant.)
-
The restaurant bills DSCC for the remaining cost
of the meal.
