DuPage Senior Citizens Council was chosen to receive $10,000 match from the McCormick Endowment Matching Program granted by the DuPage Community Foundation. A total of $50,000 was available to provide five grants of $10,000 to agencies that raise and/or transfer $40,000 to DuPage Community Foundation, which manages and markets the endowment fund for the agencies.

This new Endowment Fund for DSCC is a way for people to give back to their community even if they are no longer around. It is a way to ensure that the services they value are carried on generation after generation. Individuals can leave a legacy gift to help provide Home Delivered Meals and Home Maintenance services to senior who do not have family and friends around to help them. This gift is a lasting tribute to guarantee that their annual support will continue into eternity.

Endowments are separate funds that help charities meet their annual costs or pay for recurring programs. For some organizations, endowments also help to pay for major expenses such as capital improvements, or for creation or expansion of programs and services. Typically, the principal in the fund is not touched, but a percentage of the investment earnings is available for the nonprofit organization's use. Professional money managers usually oversee endowment funds, investing the money in stocks, bonds, and other instruments.

Building an endowment is a goal that is increasingly common among a growing number of charities -- even small, local groups that would not have considered such a move just a few years ago.

This is DSCC’s first big step towards preparing for its future. In the past, it has always strived to meet its annual fund-raising objectives but now, through this grant, it is able to also begin devising some long-range plans.
